Dressing for Mr. DiFrank's lettuce

When we lived at 10448 S. Calumet, Mr. DiFrank, an elderly man, lived on the corner. He grew enough leaf lettuce to share large bags of it with our family. Following is a salad dressing Mom used on it. Nothing else was added to the salad...just the very fresh leaf lettuce and the dressing.

1/2 C sugar
1/3 C vinegar
1/2 C evaporated milk
1/2 t salt

Add sugar to vinegar; stir until dissolved. Beat in milk until thick. Add salt. Pour over greens

I remember Mr. DiFrank because he was such a unique personality. He was a small wiry guy and he worked in the steel mill. I can't imagine him doing such heavy labor. And he had a fast staccato way of speaking. We would go to their house on the corner of Calumet and 105th because Mrs. DiFrank would give us bubble gum. Mr. DiFrank would call me over to his garden and load a paper bag with fresh picked lettuce. It was a true back yard Italian garden (I didn't know what this was till years later while I wallking down the alley of an Italian neighborhood), immaculately tended. Mr. DiFrank worked all day in a steel mill and gardened when he returned home.
